earth houses = dreamy!!!!

what is an earth house you may say? well it's a house dug into the side of a hill, like a hobbit house, with the hilltop for the roof!
i first discovered this the akward way..... i pretty much walked o n my neighbor's roof when i was a kid without knowing! oops.... i was just a small woods lassie trapesin' around in my gumboots and dress just a walk in the woods above my house. maybe lookin for berries or fairies! i grew up on a mountain side with a bunch of dirt roads up the mountain and maybe like 3 houses per road. well.... up in the woods i was bustin around, and then i kinda peered around the hill and what do i see? a bear, my dog, a squirrell?... no! a window! it was an earth house!
here are some pretty pictures of other earth houses from around the world!

When you wanna feel comfort and wholesome...

I have to live in the city for a while for work. After the recession, I just couldn't make enough of a living on my own in the forest and had to leave my cutest cabin. But I grew up in the woods and then spent many years away traveling and completing my Bachelor degree, and I always go back to see my family and never feel completely away from it in my life. And I don't think a whole upbringing of running around wild in the forest barefoot with dogs and wild elk suddenly leaves your soul when ya have to put on heals and walk on pavement. Hee hee. Living in the city for a bit is also a great way to build up a career to save up to buy land in the future. I know always that I will settle back in the woods again, it just takes some time to be able to afford that dream cabin, with hammock and goat too hopefully! :)
Anyhoo when ever I miss the wholesome innocense of the forest, I like to watch a cute Canadian TV show filmed in Alberta called Heartland, on CBC. Its about a horse ranch and super cute and has very pretty landscapes in it. When I was little my other favorite Canadian show, cuz I am proudly Canadian and from the mountains, was Road to Avonlea. Its by the same author of Anne of Green Gables and very cute too. :)
I've been back to my hicksville twice in a few months since I moved to see Mama Hick Femme. She is adorable. She is a mean tie-dyer and knitter. I am always trying to convince she should sell her knitting on etsy. She bought me a rose quartz crystal and some essential oils. I am a hippy child. It's rad. She loves Bob Dylan and used to shoot cans off the compost pile with her BB Gun when I was growing up. Loves the HT Mama! She used to like riffles but then just BB Guns, but I would try to get her not to shoot the squirrels! My Gramps belongs to the local Rod and Gun Club, which is just for hunters and they also protect some local land for endangered animals like mountain goats. I asked him once to take me to the gun range so I could try it, but he said : "It's no place for a lady." Ha ha! I never asked again. :)

The New Loretta Lynn Tribute Album

This album has such a pretty pretty cover. I love how everything is black and white with just baby pink. So pretty. The lovely and beautiful Miranda Lambert sings on this album. I saw her speaking on body image after she won at the CMA's and I really liked it. Personally I don't think she is a "bigger girl", she just looks normal to me, but growing up in the 80's I remember size 6 being the tiny size and there was no size 0. So i think its very ridiculous that size 8 is considered a plus size now and what media says is plus now I think is just a normal women's body. We have curves! And I don't know many ladies who are a size 0 to 4. Today's sizing is bonkers.
Any hoo, since there is this great new album out for Loretta, lets just remeber how she was one of the "fore-mother's" of women in country music in and had the guts to write bluntly and sassy about everyday ladies in a time when that was unheard of. According to Wikipedia, she possibly had more banned songs than any other artist in the history of country music, including "Rated X," about the double standards divorced women face, "Wings Upon Your Horns," about the loss of teenage virginity, and "The Pill," lyrics by T. D. Bayless, about a wife and mother becoming liberated via the birth control pill. Her song "Dear Uncle Sam," released in 1966 during the Vietnam War, describes a wife's anguish at the loss of a husband to war.

Review of "Country Strong" movie!

Hi there. I went to Country Strong last night. I'm not a big gwenyth fan or anything, but I liked the movie and I think she did a good job. Hope I don't sound weird but I wish the girl in this movie, Leighton and Gwenyth, had bigger boobs! Cuz their so much great big hair and big dresses and big songs, but not big that. Ha ha. Oops.
So the best part of the movie was Garret Hedlund. He was the younger country singer guy, not Tim McGraw. He could be my new pretend movie star husband! Hee hee! Sorry Nicholas Cage!!! But ya, his songs were all sung by him and great. All the actors in this movie did their own singing and guitar playing and it was quite good. I also liked they they name dropped lots of great songs and musicians in this movie, such as Townes Van Zandt, Merle Haggard's Silver Wings, and Emmy Lou! :) I also really liked the dresses of the Leighton Meester character, from Gossip Girl. Her character was a new country barbie like singer who used to be a pagent queen. So of course she also had very nice hair. Does anyone know if their are youtube or website on how to do nice country hair styles? I would love to see them, just for research purposes.... I already have one on the poof.
Here is the Country Strong Trailer, and Merle's Silver wings and lets just have Mama Tried while we're at it! :) And some Townes Van Zandt, this is one of my favorite videos ever. xo. Happy 2011 everyone.

The Backwoods Remedies Post

I was chatting with a city gal the other day who a had a dog and it randomly came up about her dog killing a chicken once. And then I was like "Oh you just do the neck trick and then it won't kill again". And she had no idea what I was talking about, and then I realized that lots of the "Backwoods remedies" that are normal to us and work great, have never been heard of by most people!
Well you are in for a treat! Let me tell ya some! xoxoxo :)

1. How to stop you dog from killing chickens
(especially if your neighbor has a liking for using his shotgun on dogs... as mine did where I grew up)
- Simply get the dead chicken and ties it to the back of the dogs neck for about 3 days. The smell and weight will become a nuisance to the dog and then it will associate a chicken with being a nuisance and never touch them again! It totally works!!! :)

2. How to stop keep spiders out of your room
(spiders are great and help out manage our insect ecosystem, but it did suck when i was a kid and wolf spiders would always bite me on the face when I was sleeping. And then you have a huge welt on your face for a week too)
- Get a Chestnut (ya, like they roast at Christmas) and drill a little hole in it with a nail and place one in each corner of your room. The spiders with stay away. I have no idea why this works. Some say the smell of the inside of the nut repels them, but can spiders smell? And some say the vibrations from the inside of the nut repels them. Chestnuts vibrate? But anyways, I used this remedy my whole life and was never bit again!!! :)

3. Honeysuckle - a nice summer snack for bush folk.
- Honey suckle is a chocker vine that grows around bushes and trees in the woods. It blooms in the summer and has pretty little orange flowers. You can drink the honey from them by picking a flower carefully from the vine then biting the bottom tip off and suck out the honey juice. Now only take a few flowers off the vine or it won't regenerate as well them next year without the pollen from the flowers. There are a lot of city folk turned fake hippies where I grew up that have started wildcrafting businesses and take way too many wildflowers from the woods now to make a profit and just think there is plenty and they will grow back, but they haven't lived there as long and haven't seen all the flowers slowing go away like the trees have from logging too. We have to appreciate natural gifts and not take them for granted. xo.

4. Camp fire smoke.
- This is an old old camp trick and I have no idea where it comes from (but if you do please tell me!) and why is works. Its mythical, but yes it works. So if you are ever sitting around a campfire (fun! xo. roast apples! yum), and smoke is in your face, just say "White rabbits" over and over and it will go away. Yup! xo.

The End!
Love Hick Femme!

Lightening From the North!

Our favorite band, the .357 String band, has a new album out call "Lightening from the North"! Yay! They are amazing crusty bluegrass from Milwauke! Listen here!
And they are pretty easy on the eyes... Hee hee. Don't tell my boyfriend! :)

Stampedin'!

We went! Calgary Stampede 2010! We bee-lined right away for the Hot Beef Sundae stand and happily discovered they had a pulled pork sundae, and DAMN it was good!
Now next there was the slight discovery of the Calgary Vet display. They had a stand in the Agriculture tent with a fake cow so you can put your hand up it to feel what a cow baby would feel like. Because you have always wanted to right!!!!!!! But of course they put talcum powder on you 1st! Of course. We both did it, giggling the whole time!

Stampede 2008

The Stampede!!! Its so fun! And have you eva heard of a hot beef sundae!!! Omg. Its sundae cup with mashed potatoes on the bottom, then beef, then gravy!!! Genius. And they have big BBQ turkey legs and corns on the cob, and elephant ears! Ya know the deep fried batter with sugar and cinnamon, not a real elephant silly!!!! There is the air bb gun game where you have to shoot the star out of a paper. Its $5 a pop and i will probably drop a 100 just there alone! hee hee. Well, maybe I can do it in $15.... :) And they have bails of hay everywhere and a you can pet baby chicks. cute!
